Consumer Reports, a nonprofit consumer research and advocacy organization, released a ranking of the most trusted vehicle types and brands on Tuesday. and models based on car owner information on over 300,000 vehicles. Forecasts for 2023 models are based on overall reliability for the last three model years.
Hybrid cars and midsize and large sedans were found to be among the most reliable vehicles based on 2000-2022 models and a few early 2023 model years, while electric vehicles and full-size pickups had the highest scores. lowest average reliability.
“With today’s inflated car prices, people are keeping their vehicles longer than ever,” Jake Fisher, senior director of automotive testing at Consumer Reports, said in a statement. “A hybrid can provide years of trouble-free miles, and they’re a good defense against rising fuel prices.
He said the top-rated hybrids offer reliability, better fuel economy and lower maintenance costs without giving up acceleration or a quiet, comfortable ride.
Top performing hybrids include the 2023 Lexus NX, 2023 Ford Maverick, and 2023 Toyota Corolla.
More than one in three potential buyers (36%) are considering a hybrid vehicle as their next car or truck purchase, up from 29% in 2019, according to Consumer Reports.
Owning a hybrid means lower fuel costs. And that may be a deal breaker for some potential buyers faced with pump prices that have fallen from an average of $3.42 a gallon a year ago to $3.76 today.

What are the least reliable vehicles?
While this year’s ranking highlights hybrid vehicles as some of the most reliable options on the road, the same is not true for plug-ins.
According to Consumer Reports, the Toyota Prius Prime and RAV4 Prime EV have lower reliability scores than their hybrid counterparts, and the Chrysler Pacifica plug-in hybrid was found to be one of the least reliable vehicles in the survey.
Only full-size pickups performed worse in terms of reliability compared to electric vehicles. Consumer Reports notes that with so many new EV models hitting the market, it’s no surprise the results are “lower.”
Models from Tesla Motors, which dominates the market for electric vehicle sales, continue to have issues with body hardware, steering and suspension, paint and trim, and the climate control system. The Model 3 has average reliability, while the other Telsa models – including the S, Y and X – are below average.

Fewer than half of Consumer Reports electric vehicle models have enough data on average or better-predicted reliability, with owners reporting charging issues, battery issues and electric-drive motor issues.
Mercedes-Benz was named the least trusted brand by Consumer Reports for the first time after owners reported electronic issues such as screens that went blank.
Pickup trucks continue to rank low for reliability, with only seven of the 17 models in this year’s survey having average or better reliability scores.

This year has been a win for Asian automakers, with Japanese or Korean companies making up seven of the top 10 most trusted brands.
Once again, Lexus is one of the highest rated brands in Consumer Report’s reliability survey. All Lexus models scored above average on reliability.
“Our data can help people choose a satisfying car that can go the distance and avoid headaches at the repair shop, which is more important than ever with high prices, low inventory and more choice of vehicles,” Fisher said in a Tuesday statement.
