Every small gesture can help counter the effects of inflation.
- Seven states are still handing out stimulus funds.
- Much of the money is expected to reach residents of the state by the end of 2022.
- For the most part, eligibility requirements apply.
By the end of this month, final stimulus checks should be automatically deposited into bank accounts or mailed to eligible recipients in the following states.
Earlier this year, the California state legislature authorized payments of up to $1,050 to help Golden State residents deal with inflation. According to the state’s Franchise Tax Board, more than $5 billion has already been spent. However, some eligible recipients will receive payment in the form of a debit card in December.
If you need to pay, but it doesn’t arrive this month, don’t worry, especially if you’ve changed your banking information since filing your 2020 tax return. The Franchise Tax Board sorts out these payments and promises to send you a debit card by January 14.
Colorado lawmakers also voted to send direct payments to state residents in the form of a tax refund. Through the Colorado Cash Back program, single filers will receive a check for $750 and joint filers will be required to pay $1,500.
While many Coloradans have already received their direct payment, anyone who requested an extension and filed their state tax returns by October 17 can expect payment by January 31, 2023 at the latest.
Full-time Idaho residents who filed taxes in 2020 and 2021 receive a tax refund of 10% of the 2020 income tax amount or $300, whichever is greater. Co-registrants will receive a minimum of $600.
The Idaho Tax Commission began processing these remittances in September and plans to continue through early 2023. Currently, it sends about 75,000 payments each week.
4. New Jersey
A one-time payment of at least $500 is made to all eligible Garden State residents. To receive a payment, a resident must not have been eligible for federal stimulus payments and must have filed a 2021 state tax return using an individual tax identification number (ITIN).
The state sends $500 to each ITIN holder on the tax return. Let’s say a married couple has two children and all four family members have an ITIN. This family can expect to receive an additional $2,000 in their bank account.
If you have not received payment by December 15, contact the New Jersey Division of Taxation.
Eligible older Pennsylvanians and people with disabilities should receive a rebate on property taxes or rent paid in 2021. Here are the details:
- Eligible owners must not earn more than $35,000 per year.
- Eligible tenants cannot earn more than $15,000 per year.
- Half of social security income is excluded from this amount. For example, if you receive $24,000 in Social Security payments, only $12,000 will count toward your total income.
- You have until December 31 to request the refund.
- The maximum standard discount is $650, but Pennsylvanians who qualify for additional discounts can receive up to $975.
6. South Carolina
Payments of up to $800 are also being made to South Carolina residents who filed their 2021 state tax returns by the October deadline. Those who missed the deadline but filed between October 17, 2022 and February 15, 2023 can expect payment by March 2023.
Tax refund checks of up to $250 for single filers and $500 for joint filers have arrived or are on their way for residents of the state of Virginia who had tax debt in 2021.
Virginians who filed their 2021 tax returns by Sept. 5 likely already have their checks, but discounts for those who filed after Sept. 5 are still being given. To be eligible, a taxpayer must have filed their tax return before November 1, 2022.
While many worry about how they’ll stay on top of inflation this holiday season, the timing of these payments couldn’t be better.
